Mealtime

Today I ventured to Crow's Nest, a local eatery with some friends. When my delicious breakfast burrito arrived, not only could I not help but instantly start demolishing the mexican inspired meal, but also glance around the table to the emotions of my friends. Sure, it was 11 o'clock and we were all on the brink of becoming "hangry"– a state of anger and irritability resulting from being hungry – but the intense looks that crossed their faces was something i had never seen before. It was as if they were animals, about to attack prey. Food does crazy things to people. When we look back on history, there are numerous examples of some pretty gruesome acts just so people have been able to eat. One disturbing instance of this can be seen in the 1972 when the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes Mountains and the survivors of the crash gave in to cannibalism in order to survive. Not only is food one of the greatest pleasures in life, but one thing that can cause the most insanity in people when they are deprived of it.

  1. It's a drive/desire that keeps us alive (and could kill us) and yet it also is entertainment and a way to experience pleasure. Complex stuff. Endlessly fascinating. Did you enjoy your meal?
